2024-04-07T19:33:52+10:00

Abstract Objective To estimate the number of general practice-appropriate attendances in a remote emergency department and explore the reasons for patients’ choice of service. Design A four-step case study approach was adopted, focusing on hospital emergency department (ED) attendances that were potentially manageable in general practice. Setting A large, remote community with substantial populations of Indigenous peoples and fly-in, fly-out mining industry workers. The ED is experiencing rapid growth in demand for services for lower urgency. Participants Patients attending the emergency department with lower urgency problems. Interventions ED attendance data for 2016 were reviewed to identify lower urgency presentations. Patient [...]

Promoting Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice in Rural Health Settings: Learnings from a State-Wide Multi-Methods Study.

2024-04-07T19:34:25+10:00

Abstract Evidence is mounting regarding the positive effects of Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice (IPECP) on healthcare outcomes. Despite this, IPECP is only in its infancy in several Australian rural healthcare settings. Whilst some rural healthcare teams have successfully adopted an interprofessional model of service delivery, information is scarce on the factors that have enabled or hindered such a transition. Using a combination of team surveys and individual semi-structured team member interviews, data were collected on the enablers of and barriers to IPECP implementation in rural health settings in one Australian state. Using thematic analysis, three themes were developed from [...]

Co-designing community-focused rural placements for collaborative practice.

2024-04-07T19:34:44+10:00

Abstract Aims and Context As a University Department of Rural Health, we have identified recurrent areas of service need among vulnerable rural populations, specifically the need for allied health. Concurrently, we have also identified missed opportunities for deliberate collaborative practice in rural clinical placements. This paper provides a commentary on our work in progress as we work to leverage available opportunities to provide both service from and education for health profession students on rural clinical placements. Approach We developed a transdisciplinary placement model, informed by practice theory, which encompasses pre-placement preparation, student support, host sites and clinicians, and a structured [...]

Abstract Objective To determine sources of key nutrients contributing towards nutritional adequacy during pregnancy (fibre, calcium, iron, zinc and folate) in a cohort of women carrying an Indigenous child. Design Analysis of cross-sectional data from a prospective longitudinal cohort study that followed Indigenous women through pregnancy. Setting Women recruited via antenatal clinics in regional and remote locations in NSW, Australia as part of the Gomeroi gaaynggal project. Participants One hundred and fifty-two pregnant Australian women who identified as Indigenous or carrying an Indigenous child. Measurements and Findings Measurement outcomes included demographic information, smoking status, anthropometrics (weight and height,), self-reported pre-pregnancy [...]

Reaching at-risk rural men: An evaluation of a health promotion activity targeting men at a large agricultural event.

2024-04-07T19:36:13+10:00

Abstract Issue addressed This paper evaluates the effectiveness of an Australian Men's Shed Association's ‘Spanner in the Works?’ health promotion tent in reaching at-risk rural men during a large agricultural event in rural Australia. Methods Men who self-presented to the health promotion tent had basic health measurements and risk scores recorded. These were linked to a short survey asking about their primary health care engagement. To determine the ‘reach’ afforded to health professionals through their presence at the agricultural event, the mean systolic blood pressure and waist circumference measures of participants were compared to those of rural men nationally using [...]

Rural health services’ relationships with patients: An enabler and a barrier to advance care planning.

2024-04-07T19:36:40+10:00

Abstract Objective The barriers and enablers to the uptake of advance care plans has been well documented but more so in metropolitan health services. Rural and regional areas have their own challenges of higher rates of chronic illness and an aging population when considering end of life care. This study aimed to explore the creation of advance care plans in a regional location that has service links to smaller health services. Design A qualitative study involving thematic analysis of interview data. Setting A regional local government area in Victoria, Australia. Participants Twelve representatives from rural and regional health services, including [...]
